Peru Independence Day
If you want to experience the true spirit of Peru, you should visit the country in July around Peru Independence Day. The celebrations actually last for two days and both are national holidays, but the festivities are certainly a sight to witness.
If you fly into Peru in July, you’ll immediately notice an abundance of Peruvian flags proudly flying outside of public as well as private buildings. If you’re new to Peruvian culture and didn’t fly in to specifically witness the Independence Day festivities, you’re in luck. Peru is never more lively and energetic as it is during this time of the year.
The celebrations are known as Fiestas Patrias. The actual date of independence is on July 28th. As Lima is the capital, the Peru Independence Day festivities are grandly celebrated there. The day begins with a 21 cannon salute, which is very exciting to witness. That is followed by Te Deum Mass, which is held by the Archbishop of Lima. The mass is attended by many prominent people, including the country’s President, who gives an official address to the people of Peru directly after the mass.
Parades and Fairs
During Fiesta Patrias, you don’t just get to witness the sheer national pride and enthusiasm of the Peruvian people, but also their spirit of fun and cheer. You can get completely caught up in the celebrations, having the time of your life. Peru Independence Day is celebrated grandly throughout the country but it’s in Lima that you see its full effect.
There are huge parades on the streets & great fairs where you can buy interesting souvenirs. Everyone is determined to have a great deal of fun. While the day time is great, it’s during the evenings that the party really gets started. There are grand firework displays that light up the night sky and beer and other drinks flow freely.
More Festivities
You feel like you’re a part of a grand party and the 28th of July always ends with a bang. The following day is a holiday in honour of the National Police and the Armed Forces of Peru. If you plan your travel dates right, you might be able to witness the stunning Gran Parada Militar Del Peru, i.e., The Great Military Parade.
