Pisco Sour – The Pride of Peru
You may or may not be aware that slowly, but steadily, Peru is making a name for itself in the international Pisco market. Like its southern neighbor Chile, the climate and soil conditions here are very suitable for winemaking. However, if you ask the local people, you’ll see that they don’t much care for wines. There’s another, much more beloved spirit available in the market: the Pisco Sour. At Royal Park Hotel, we always encourage our guests to taste the Pisco Sour. It is part of the gastronomic experience in Lima.
An Introduction To Pisco Sour
If you’ve never seen or drunk Pisco Sour, you’ll find it to be a marvel. It looks wonderfully enticing; it’s a smoke-colored liquid with a cloud of foam on top. The taste is tart with an overtone of sweetness. The texture changes from the egg-white foam on top to the icy-cold brandy at the bottom. Anyone who drinks it will never forget the taste. You’ll find the cocktail in even the finest luxury Lima hotel.
How Is It Made?
Pisco Sour is made from Pisco brandy, which is made from different grapes in different forms. The pure Pisco comes from the quebranta grape variety; Muscat grapes are also often used. This spirit is the primary ingredient in Pisco Sour. After you’ve acquired the brandy, making the cocktail is very easy.
You need to add one part of raw egg whites, sugar syrup, and lime or lemon juice to three parts of Pisco. The mixture must then be shaken vigorously until the egg whites form a nice layer of foam over the drink.
While you might think that the combination of raw eggs and brandy is odd, but one can’t really argue with the taste. It’s a part of the best gastronomic experience in Lima.
A Brief Look Into The History
For a long time, the origin of Pisco Sour was a mystery. The people of Peru and Chile argued over it for several years before an unbiased European body accorded patrimony to Peru. Most would agree that the drink was first sold in Lima’s Morris Bar in the early 20th Century. Today, even the finest luxury Lima hotel makes it in their bar.
